Early Life

Nims Purja was born on the 25th of July, 1983, in Myadgi, Nepal’s Gandaki Province. He is Nepal-born but naturalized British. He has 4 siblings, two elder brothers, and a younger sister.

His father was a Gurkha soldier, which probably influenced Nims Purja’s ambition, and his mother is a farmer. Nims Purja religion is Hindu and from the Magar ethnic group.

Growing up, Purja had a tough and poor childhood. “We came from a really poor family,” and “as a kid, I remember I didn’t even have flip-flops,” Purja told National Geographic.

At 4, Nims Purja and his family moved to the Chitwan district. He attended a small heaven school in Bharatpur, Chitwan, for his elementary education.

He attended an English boarding school, where his seniors constantly bullied him. Then he learned kickboxing and became a professional kickboxer. Nims Purja took every opportunity his education brought him.

Nims Purja later moved to London, where he studied at Loughborough University in England. He also had a risk and security management diploma from the same University.

Career

Nims Purja’s notable career can be categorized into two aspects;

1. The Military Man

He started his military career in a Gurkha Brigade, a term used to refer to the British Army unit made up of Nepalese solider, in 2003.

In 2009, his acceptance into the Royal Navy’s Special Boat Service (SBS) made him the first Gurkha to join the elite British unit. He served there as a cold-weather warfare specialist.

While serving in the SBS, Purja developed an interest in mountain climbing. And by 2012, he had finished his first trek to the Mount Everest base camp.

He then became a special forces cold weather warfare specialist. Unfortunately, he was severely injured when a sniper hit him in combat. In 2018, Nims Purja retired as Lance Corporal from the British Military to pursue his mountaineering ambition.

Thereafter, Purja began his journey as a mountaineer. Today, he is considered one of the most successful mountaineers due to all his accomplishments in mountain climbing.

2. The Mountaineer

Nirmal Purja started his mountaineering career in 2012 when he had no prior experience. He did his first major climb to the summit of the Lobuche East, and on the 18th of May, 2014, he made his first eight-thousander by climbing the Dhaulagiri’s 8,167 meters.

In 2016, Nims Purja had a second trip to Mount Everest. Likewise, he led a team, Gurkha Expedition, G200E, to the peak of Mount Everest with 13 Gurkhas, including himself making 14 in total in 2017 to commemorate 200 years of service to the British empire. Queen Elizabeth awarded him an MBE.

In 2019, Nims Purja started the project possible with his team of sherpas. The project was Nims Purja challenging himself to climb all 14 eight thousand meters in 6 months. In the first phase, he climbed to the peak of Nepali along with his team.

By the 23rd of April, he had already climbed a total of 6 mountains, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Kanchenjunga, Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu, of the project possible. He broke the world record by reaching the summit of Lhotse from Everest and scaling Makalu in 48 hours and 30 minutes.

In October 2019, they completed the last phase to reach the peak of Manaslu, Cho Oyu. After much negotiations between the Chinese and Nepali government, they got to the summit of Tibet’s Shishapangma, completing the project possible mission.

After the project, it was recorded that Nims Purja and his team conquered the 14 summits in 6 months and 6 days. After the challenge, Nims Purja was determined to break another record, then took a break them embarked on another mission; the challenge was to get to the summit of Mt K2 in winter.

The team wrote history again and became the first Mountaineer to achieve this. It was a dream come through for Nims Purja.

3. Others
