Steven Avery started serving jail terms at a very young age. In 1981, then 18 years old Avery was convicted of burglary.

Following this crime, he received a two-year sentence in the Manitowoc County prison. However, he was released on probation after serving ten months and asked to pay restitution.

The following year, Steven Avery was found guilty of animal cruelty. He had instigated the burning of his cat and, consequently, was jailed and released in August 1983.

In 1985, Avery was wrongfully convicted of sexual assault and attempted murder. He received a 32-year sentence and served 18 years, being found innocent after DNA testing.

He left prison in 2003. Barely two years after his release, Steven Avery landed himself another conviction for the murder of a photographer named Teresa Halbach. He received a life sentence for the murder conviction, with no possibility of parole.

Personal Life

Even though Steven Avery spent most of his adult life in prison, he was once married. In 1982 he tied the knot with his heartthrob, Lori Mathiesen.

Before marrying Avery, Lori had a son from a previous relationship. Avery accepted the boy as his son.

Lori also had four children for Avery; two girls, Rachel Avery and Jennifer Avery. They also had twin boys, Steven Jr Avery and Bill Avery.

Sadly, their marriage ended in 1988, six years after their wedding, due to Avery’s wrongful conviction case in 1985. Lori Mathiesen could not handle all that and decided to seek divorce.
