Career, Movies, and TV Shows

The 1980s

Lowe had developed a love for acting at the young age of eight while seeing a theater production of Oliver! He told the Guardian in a 2009 interview that he had wanted “to be one of those kids up there [on stage].”

And sure enough, while a sophomore in high school, Lowe landed his first tv role in the American sitcom, “A New Kind of Family.” The series was, however, short-lived, only running for one season, from September 1979 to January 1980.

In 1982, Lowe got his official introduction to the big screen in the television film Thursday’s Child. The movie garnered him his first Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries, or Television Film.

Nonetheless, Lowe’s real breakthrough came in 1983, when he appeared in the critically acclaimed movie, The Outsiders. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, the coming-of-age drama starred an up-and-coming young cast, including Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise, and Patrick Swayze.

This role gained him massive popularity, leading to him being named as a member of the “Brat Pack” – a group of young, highly successful actors.

The group included stars like Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, and Demi Moore.

In 1984, Lowe starred opposite Jodie Foster in the British-American comedy-drama film, “The Hotel New Hampshire.” The movie was written and directed by Tony Richardson and bombed at the box office.

In 1985, Lowe reunited again with fellow Brat Pack group member Emilio Estevez for another youth drama called St. Elmo’s Fire. The following year, Lowe co-starred in  “About Last Night… ” alongside another Brat pack member, Demi Moore.

His roles in these movies made Lowe one of the hottest young heartthrobs of the 1980s.

The 1990s

Lowe continued to wow his fans with his performances in movies like “Wayne’s World,” released in 1992, and Contract (1997). He returned to television in 1999 to co-star with Martin Sheen in the well-received drama series “The West Wing.”

His performance as Sam Seaborn on the show earned Lowe two Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor in a Drama Series and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.

The same year (1999), Lowe was also featured in the American spy comedy, “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.”

The 2000s

The following year,  Lowe starred in the 2000 American superhero comedy film, “The Specials,” directed by Craig Mazin and written by James Gunn. In 2002, Lowe announced his exit from the popular show “ The West King” in season 4 due to a salary disagreement.

After leaving the show, Rob starred in the failed drama, “The Lyon’s Den,” in which he was part of the executive producers. The series premiered on the American television network NBC on September 28, 2003.

After airing only six episodes, NBC canceled the show on November 30, 2003, due to poor ratings. The actor tried his hand again on other TV shows like “View From the Top” (2003),  “Dr. Vegas” (2004), and “Perfect Strangers” (2004), but they were all unsuccessful.

However, the 2006 TV series “Brothers & Sisters,” was exactly what the actor needed to bounce back again.

He had a similar run on the 2009–2015 sitcom Parks and Recreation, with a guest appearance role in 2010 before becoming a regular cast member.

In the interim, Lowe published two memoirs: Stories I Only Tell My Friends: An Autobiography in 2011 and Love Life in 2014.

Lowe started a new chapter in his career on the 2015-2016 TV series, “Grinder,” as one of the main characters after making an appearance in the Parks and Recreation season finale in 2015.

In the fall of 2016, Lowe starred in the 2016-2018 CBA drama “Code Black.” That same year, he accepted a voice role in the animated series “The Lion Guard,” which aired until late 2019.

In 2017, Lowe and his two sons started an A&E reality series called Lowe Files. The reality show documents their cross-country trips and explorations into unsolved mysteries.

The following year, the actor made his directorial debut in the television remake of the 1956 movie “The Bad Seed.” Then in 2019, he starred in the TV series “Wild Bill” and hosted the Mental Samurai game show the same year.

Lowe finished the year by co-starring in the Netflix romantic comedy Holiday in the Wild with Kristin Davis. He opened the new year with the lead role in the American procedural drama television series “9-1-1: Lone Star.”

Personal Life

In 1991, Lowe got married to his heartthrob, Sheryl Berkoff. They have two sons together:  Edward Matthew (born in 1993) and John Owen (born in 1995).

In late 2003, Lowe lost his mom, Barbara, to breast cancer, a disease that also took the life of her mother and grandmother. She died at the age of 64.

As a result of this, he became an advocate for breast cancer awareness. He went on to become the first male spokesperson for the 2000 Lee National Denim Day fundraising event for breast cancer awareness and research.
