Kathleen Doyle Bates, as is her legal name, was born on June 28, 1948, to Langdon and Bertye in Memphis Tennessee. Langdon was a Mechanical Engineer and Bertye was a Homemaker.

Kathy grew up alongside his two sisters, Mary and Patricia. She attended White High School and graduated in 1965.

Later she moved on to Southern Methodist University in Dallas where graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Arts in 1969.

While in the university, Bates was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority and majored in theatre studies. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1969.

Kathy moved to New York City in 1970 where she began taking classes at the William Esper Studio. In 1971, she made her first movie appearance in the film “Taking Off”.


Bates’ first movie appearance was in 1971 in the film “Taking Off”. Her first TV appearance was in the 1977 episode of the NBC melodrama “The Doctors”.

Personal Life

Bates struggled with depression during her teenage days. She wrote sad songs that she described herself in. In 1991, she married Tony Campisi.

The marriage lasted for 6 years and they had a divorce in 1997. The 6 years of Union didn’t produce a child. Bates is a known member of the United Methodist Church and an active Democrat as well.

Kathy was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer in 2003 but was not made public until January 2009 when she publicly stated that she has been undergoing treatment for over 5 years.

Moving on to 2012, Bates was diagnosed with Breast cancer and had a double Mastectomy. It was a journey of many downs for Bates within those years.

In 2014, barely two years after the mastectomy, at the New York Walk for Lymphedema & Lymphatic Diseases, in a pre-recorded message, Bates revealed that she has been suffering from lymphedema in her arms which resulted from the double mastectomy she underwent.

Kathy began serving on the Lymphatic Education & Research Network’s honorary board as a chairperson later that year. She also became a spokesperson for lymphedema.
