Early Life

John Karl Fetterman was born on the 15th of August 1969 in West Reading, Pennsylvania. His father, Karl, and mother, Susan had him while they were teenagers.

They had just begun their lives together and had been trying to find their feet when John came into the picture.

Eventually, the Fetterman clan moved to York, where Karl worked as a partner in an insurance firm.

As a result of his parents’ efforts, John Fetterman had a smooth childhood, one without hardships. Because of their resilience and hardwork, he didn’t have to struggle for anything.

He was privileged to be raised by parents who were affluent and could afford more than the basic necessities of life.

John Fetterman attended the same school (Albright College) as his father. It was here he obtained a bachelor’s degree in finance.

He went on to receive a master of business degree from the University of Connecticut. It was at this time that he unfortunately experienced a tragedy that defined his life.

In 1993, Fetterman’s best friend died in a motor accident, shattering him. This incident spurred Fetterman to join New Haven’s Big Brothers Big Sisters of America program.

And it was here that his life took an interesting turn. More details will be discussed later in the article.

Fetterman also attended Harvard University in 1999 and got a degree in Public policy.

John Fetterman is married to Gisele Baretto Almeida, a Brazilian-American activist. The two met in 2007 and tied the knot the following year.

Almeida had heard about his work as the mayor of Braddock, and decided to write a letter to him. The letter addressed issues that concerned the town and expressed an interest in visiting the community to see the ongoing work.

On receiving the letter, Fetterman invited Almeida to Braddock and the rest they say is history.

The duo tied the knot in 2008 and have been married ever since. They also have three adorable children together.

John Fetterman’s passion for service began a long time ago.

After losing his 27-year-old best friend to an accident, the senator decided to join Big brothers Big sisters of America.

He was assigned to an eight-year-old boy and vouched to look after him. The child had lost his father to AIDS and was about to lose his mother to the same disease.

During that time, Fetterman discovered his love for service and decided to pursue a career that would afford him the opportunity to serve. He made a promise to the child’s mother and told her he would take care of her son after she was gone.

Fetterman kept his promise.

Eventually, he left his lucrative position at a top insurance firm in 1995 to become a social worker. Since then, he has gone on to record impressive feats.

He started an Out-of-School-Youth Program and helped young people in Braddock to gain their General Educational Tests (GED).

Around that time, Braddock had been going through tough times. They had just been hit with a decline in the US steel industry and were adversely affected.

Their economy suffered a hit, and many people left town. However, Fetterman wasn’t discouraged.

He went on to serve as the part-time mayor of Braddock and the full-time director of the city’s youth program. During that time, he worked tirelessly to restore the town’s glory.

As mayor, he achieved a lot. He initiated youth programs and invested in the town’s infrastructure.

He also built gardens, parks and even purchased the town’s first Presbyterian Church with his money.

He has been reelected as mayor to three subsequent terms and is currently serving as a senator for the United States.

In 2013, John Fetterman had an incident in North Braddock.

He heard a sound and assumed it was gunfire. This made him chase down an unarmed jogger, who he suspected was responsible, and detain him with a shotgun.

The jogger, Chris Miyares, was a black American, and this raised suspicions of racism.

People believed that the reason for Fetterman’s action was Miyares skin color. And they weren’t having it.

Fetterman begged to differ. According to him, the Black American had been running towards a school, which happened around the time of the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting.

Miyares claimed that the sound was from a group of kids shooting bottle rockets and not gunshots. He felt he was wrongly attacked by the politician.

On the other hand, Fetterman believed he did the right thing and has not apologized to date.

There were no charges presented against Fetterman, and no formal complaint was filed either by Miyares.
